Moon Metal's core business is that of pyrometallurgical extraction, i.e. smelting of copper and the right proportions of other minerals at a high temperature.
These high temperature processes first roast
copper ore, then smelt it in a furnace, oxidize and reduce the molten
products to progressively remove sulfur, iron, silicon and oxygen to
leave behind relatively pure copper. This continuous smelting process
takes place within a lining-less water jacket cupola furnace that can operate at temperatures of around 1,100°C.
Moon Metal's operations are situated at Likasi (110 kilometres northwest of Lubumbashi) and are strategically located in the vicinity of rich copper ore deposits.
The final product is black copper, a 94% - 97% grade of pure copper, in the form of ingots, each weighing about 160 kilograms.
